We’re open to a broad range of experiences; however, at this time, we are particularly seeking individuals with experience in:

  • Finance and accounting (potential Treasurer role)
  • Governance, Legal and risk (potential Secretary role)
  • Fundraising and philanthropy
  • Strategy and growth
  • Clinical governance
  • Lived experience as a Young Carer or carer, or deep connection to the communities that we work with

Core Responsibilities

The duties and responsibilities of this role include, but are not limited to:

  • Strategic Leadership: Contribute to the development, oversight, and monitoring of Little Dreamers’ strategic direction, ensuring alignment with its mission, vision, and values.
  • Governance and Compliance: Ensure Little Dreamers operates in accordance with its constitution, relevant legislation, regulatory requirements, and best practice governance principles.
  • Financial Oversight: Review and monitor financial performance, approve budgets and major expenditures, and ensure Little Dreamers’ long-term financial sustainability.
  • Risk Management: Identify and manage key risks to Little Dreamers and provide oversight of systems and processes to mitigate those risks. Ensure Little Dreamers operates within its existing Safeguarding Children requirements and review incident reports and child safety documentation as required.
  • Advocacy and Representation: Act as an ambassador for Little Dreamers, promoting our work and purpose to external stakeholders and supporting strategic relationships and partnerships.
  • Executive Support: Appoint, support, and evaluate the CEO’s performance and provide guidance where appropriate.
  • Organisational Stewardship: Contribute to a positive, inclusive, high-functioning board culture, bringing your unique skills, insights, and lived experience to board discussions.
  • Meeting Participation: Attend and actively participate in all board meetings (approximately 7 per year) and relevant subcommittees or working groups.

Other tasks as required by the Chair and/or CEO.

About Little Dreamers

Little Dreamers is Australia’s leading Young Carer organisation, supporting thousands of children and young people who provide care for a family member living with disability, chronic or mental illness, substance use or conditions related to ageing. Founded in 2009 by a Young Carer, we deliver a wide range of programs and advocacy initiatives that improve the quality of life, reduce social isolation, and create equal opportunities for Young Carers across the country. We believe in a world where every Young Carer is supported by someone or something by 2030.

Key Selection Criteria
  • A genuine alignment with and passion for Little Dreamers’ vision, purpose, and values and a desire to contribute to positive social impact.
  • An understanding of (or willingness to develop knowledge in) not-for-profit governance, including legal and fiduciary responsibilities, and the ability to contribute to strategic oversight and decision-making.
  • Professional experience and/or lived experience that strengthens the collective expertise of the Board. We particularly welcome applicants with skills in one or more of the following areas: financial management or accounting, legal or risk management, fundraising or philanthropy, clinical governance, clinical mental health or wellbeing, government relations or advocacy.
  • Ability to work respectfully and constructively with fellow Board Members and the Senior Leadership Team, contributing to a positive and inclusive Board culture.
  • Capacity to attend regular Board meetings (approx. 7 times per year), contribute to a subcommittee or working group, and participate in key organisational events.

We strongly encourage applications from individuals with lived experience as a Young Carer, carer, or from communities we work alongside, including those from diverse cultural backgrounds, rural or regional areas, First Nations communities, or the LGBTQIA+ community.
