About Us

We’re Little Dreamers, Australia’s leading non-profit organisation working with Young Carers around the country.

A Young Carer is anyone under the age of 25 who currently provides, or intends to provide, care in their family for a parent or sibling who has a chronic illness, mental illness, disability or addiction.

Founded in 2009 by a Young Carer, we love building and delivering high quality programs that create deep and meaningful impact in the lives of young people providing care in their families. And we’re pretty good at it too. To date, we have supported over 5,000 Young Carers, we deliver eight core programs alongside ad hoc supports, advocacy and community awareness campaigns. We have strong corporate partnership and funding relationships and have raised over $5 million to improve the quality of life for Young Carers around Australia. We have even received recognition from Queen Elizabeth II and have been named as an internationally best practice organisation for Young Carer support.

Our team is made up of 50 incredible humans working across VIC, NSW, QLD. We are humble, hungry, kind and work hard to reach our goals. We believe in a world where every single Young Carer is supported by someone or something by 2030. Sounds fun right?!

The Operations Director at Little Dreamers reports into the CEO and is responsible for supporting the success of Little Dreamers through people support and financial management, good governance, compliance and risk management, and effective day-to-day operations for the organisation. This will be achieved in conjunction with leading a team of highly talented and well-established leaders with specific accountability for people and culture, operations and Carer Gateway delivery and partnerships, as well as through support from Little Dreamers’ outsourced CFO. 

Success in this role involves creating and sustaining a workforce culture built on well-defined values, integrity and teamwork.

The Specifics

Strategy, Performance and Risk

  • Ensure goals and KPIs are implemented across the organisation;
  • Report on operational performance to the CEO and the Board;
  • Manage Little Dreamers’ overarching strategic risk management framework; and
  • Support the State Managers and members of the Leadership Team to understand their strategy and report regularly on their performance against KPIs.

Financial Management

  • Work with the CEO to develop and track against the Little Dreamers annual budget;
  • Work closely with our external CFO to report regularly on financial performance, position and cashflow to the CEO and Board;
  • Oversee finance, accounting, bookkeeping and auditing work with the support of external CFO; and 
  • Support the State Managers and members of the Leadership Team to understand their budgets and report regularly on their performance against budget targets.

Governance, Compliance and Safety

  • Manage Little Dreamers’ compliance obligations including legal, HR, WHS and privacy;
  • Develop and oversee the Little Dreamers risk management framework, Safeguarding Children Accreditation and all processes related to program delivery;
  • Critically analyse Little Dreamers existing policies, processes and practices and implement recommendations where required to improve efficiencies, and quality of service delivered;
  • Maintain Little Dreamers’ insurances; and
  • Manage the operational relationship with our external legal counsel.

Contract Management

  • Develop and guide proposals, negotiations and contractual arrangements to meet program delivery requirements;
  • Prepare and manage provider tenders and quotations for services provided by Little Dreamers including Carer Gateway Partnerships; 
  • Ensure we are compliant with all funding requirements across the organisation; and 
  • Work with the executive team to support negotiating and managing contracts with third parties.

Business Operations

  • Manage all Little Dreamers offices including rental negotiations and contracts;
  • Manage and oversee the Little Dreamers IT network including relationships with external organisations including Salesforce and Employment Hero;
  • Oversee all administrative requirements including reporting, expenses, timesheet management, leave and scheduling of staff

People and Leadership

  • Manage, mentor and lead a team including People and Culture Manager (Volunteer Coordinator), Operations Manager (Admin Assistant via a Traineeship Program), and National Carer Gateway Manager (NSW and QLD Community Engagement Coordinators);
  • Support your direct reports in delivering on their KPIs and strategic objectives; and 
  • Guide direct reports on effectively managing their teams’ performance and behaviour in line with strategic business goals, objectives and overall behaviour and value alignment.

Other duties as required by the CEO.

Our programs are held off-site, in various locations around Australia, meeting the needs where our Young Carers are located. In order to perform the full extent of this role, you must be able and willing to regularly travel around Victoria and Australia. All Little Dreamers staff delivering face-to-face programs are required to be up to date with their COVID-19 vaccinations.

Key Selection Criteria

The person suited to this role must have:

  • Experience working in a similar role (extra points if was a ‘for-purpose’ company or non-profit)
  • A solid understanding of service delivery and compliance (in the not for profit space is desirable)
  • Significant experience managing complex financial budgets and reporting requirements
  • Strong leadership capabilities – you don’t shy away from providing feedback and managing performance
  • Experience driving operational plans
  • Strong general management skills such as business planning, operations oversight and risk management 
  • Significant experience delivering on strategic objectives
  • Project management and organisational skills desired
  • High learning agility with a creative problem solving lens
  • Excellent communicator with all stakeholders, both verbally and written
  • Experience managing remote teams (you keep all team members engaged especially over Zoom!)
  • You are a natural intrapreneur (you get excited by growth and see challenges and space as opportunity)

  • Understanding of the carer or Young Carer space
  • Direct experience working with vulnerable young people
  • Lived experience as a Young Carer
  • Experience with Salesforce CRM

This is full time (38 hours). This position is classified as a permanent full time employee under the Social Community Home Care and Disability Industry Award 2010 (MA000100).
