📣 News for Young Carers from the 2024 Federal Budget! 🎉

Mental Health Support: $2.8B to strengthen Medicare and $888.1m improve access to mental health services, crucial for Young Carers facing significant challenges.

Financial Support: Cost-of-living measures like electricity rebates and increased rent assistance will provide much-needed relief.

Carer Payment Flexibility: New rules allow up to 100 hours of work over four weeks, offering more flexibility for paid work, study, or volunteering. This benefits around 31,000 carers, including over 25,000 women.

NDIS Commitment: Additional funding to enhance support services for families caring for individuals with disabilities.

We’re optimistic about these positive steps and will keep advocating for more support for Young Carers. Stay tuned for updates!

Little Dreamers welcomes the planned relaxation of the Carers Payment ‘25-hour rule’. Young carers already face significant challenges in balancing their caring responsibilities with getting an education and they should not be required to choose between learning or financial support.

Currently, the “25-hour rule” dictates that to be eligible for carer payment, carers must not exceed 25 hours (including travel) of work, education or volunteering each week.

With the removal of education, work and volunteering from this rule, Young Carers will have equal opportunities to pursue education and transition into adulthood, just like their peers without caregiving responsibilities.
