I care for: my older sister
Hi, I’m Xavier.
I’m 11 years old, and I love to play and watch sport. I would describe my personality as…sporty! In my spare time, I’ll go to the skatepark, kick the footy, hang out at the bike jumps with my friends, or go to the cricket nets with Dad.
My favourite subjects at school are sport, and snack and lunchtimes (if they count!).
My dream is to become an AFL player.
I’m a Young Carer for my older sister, who is autistic, and my younger sister, who has a chronic medical condition.
From day to day, I help my sisters around the house a lot, which means that I have to get up early most days. I provide a lot of emotional support, helping my sisters if they fight, helping explain certain situations and things to them and helping my parents out wherever they need. I don’t really think of my caring role as a special task – to me it’s just normal life as it’s what I’ve always done. There are times when I feel like I have less time for myself than my friends do, but I do enjoy being able to help out and take care of my family. It’s made us a lot closer.
My favourite day ever was when I visited the Hangar at Tullamarine and met the Essendon Football Club for my Dream Experience! I got to meet my favourite player, Anthony McDonald-Tipungwuti, and watch the players train. I’ll never forget that day.
I have also loved being part of Holiday Programs with Little Dreamers and meeting other Young Carers and making new friends.
